This eight volume study from the CGES is published at a time when Iraq’s future is beginning to look brighter and business development is becoming realistic. It will ensure you are equipped with all the relevant information for future negotiations and are able to make quick decisions.

The study provides invaluable information concerning Iraq’s upstream oil industry, oil related policies, petroleum laws and contracts, as well as how to do business in the country.

Background

Since the fall of Baghdad in 2003, the world’s interest has been focused on Iraq and its oil. Iraq’s huge unexploited oil potential is widely recognised. Known recoverable oil reserves would allow Iraq’s oil output to rise to 6-8mbpd, if developed.

The recent rounds of auctions of contracts to develop Iraqi oilfields for IOCs confirms that the Ministry of Oil in Iraq is opening its doors to foreign investment.

The interesting and historic deal reached by the BP-led consortium and the Iraqi Ministry of Oil underlines the importance of Iraq as a key supplier of oil for decades to come, and the lucrative possibilities available in the country.

About the author

Dr Thamir Uqaili, the principal author, is a petroleum engineer with over 40 years experience in exploration, petroleum engineering and technical management in the INOC and at the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, and who has led a team of Iraqi experts to provide research for this study.

He has taken considerable risks to his personal safety in accumulating the data and information, during numerous visits to Iraq over the last four years.

This study contains a large amount of hands-on operational information on Iraq’s oilfields and examines exploration in the country. With copious well-by-well and field-by-field data, it offers a wealth of detail on how actual operations are conducted in Iraq.

Hydrocarbon exploration and field development in Iraq is essential reading for companies who aspire to a future market presence in Iraq, who are about to enter Iraq or who plan to expand their existing activities in the country.
